Storyline & Experiments #Brainstorm

This post is about sharing my ideas and coming up with ways that i could tell my story through my work in the next few weeks. Experimenting with story's where it would create are good foundation to start as i experiments with the visual side of my work.

Friends & Brother Experiment
experiments it will be more about driving around and what we witness. Going out at all night and getting in to situations that we weren't meant to get in. During experiments every week can help develop my story.

  • Long Drives and Road Trips
  • Experiment with songs and lip syncing
  • Time Lapse
  • Animation Experiments
  • Frame by Frame
  • Tutorials on Premiere and After Effects
Story Experiments
Experiences that i shared in the past with my brother will help me create are natural idea. Telling stories while we drive through the day and night scene.

Personal and Cheesy story's will help during this process of experiments. I really like the thought of having the different situations of being in the car with people. For example your personality with your friends is not the same to how you act when you are driving with your family.

Car Experiments #1

Experiment #1

Music
Ty Dolla Sign Ft. ILoveMakonnen - Why'd you call

This was my first experiment with my friends from the second year. I wanted to experiment by driving from home into uni. I really like how the background changes and we are still.

Having more than one subject in the car creates volume and i will experiment with my self to see the difference.

So from here i will edit the original experiment. Take screenshots of the experiment and add it into the video.

What Worked?
Having me in the car to experiment with my friends really made it feel natural. I like the look of the background when it is on time lapse.
What Didn't Work?
Before i started the experiment i should of been in the front because it is all about how i position myself in the car. So when i experiment next i will sit in the front.
Whats Next?
I will take screen shots of this video experiment and add it to the video. To show the difference of the two i will post the process.

Class Critique #1

Class Critique

Today was a good chance for individuals in the class to talk about there ideas and processes with the class. The aim of this exercise is to give positive and negative feedback to help with their experiments in the weeks ahead.

So for my class critique there were a lot of positive feedback and constructive ideas that will help me towards my work.

  • Road Trip Experiment
  • Get drunk get lost in the streets of Aotearoa.
  • Does not have to be a complete narrative.
  • Make the figure in a non pose way. (Natural)
  • Get someone to take photos of one night in the car.
  • Selfie/Go Pro
  • Personal Experience
  • Car Pool Karaoke
  • More real life, Facial Expressions, Body Angles
  • Natural Images not posed
  • Look at the movie Hangover for ideas about reverse odd narrative.

Research #Thunderbirds

Thunderbirds (Movie)

I Remember watching thunderbirds as a kid and wondering how they achieved this movie. Before they added animations to the movie it looked as if they used the puppet technique to move the characters around and make there mouths move.

This could help me in my experiments for my work. But the relation between me and the thunderbirds is not enough to make artwork on.

What Worked?
Having to look at something that related to my childhood memories was a good experience.

What Didn't Work?
At this age thunderbirds doesn't interest me as much as it did growing up.

What Next?
Research on other programs and movies that relate to my work.

Research Storyline #2

Home Of The Brave

These are some of the videos that found looking on youtube when i searched "Otara" surprisingly i wasn't shocked when these videos came up. But that is the ugly truth and i am proud to say that i am from this place. Good or bad Otara will be my home.

This video shows samoan people in the United States Of America where they explain how they are living. The only thing about this video. it shows brotherhood and that is how we are brought up. To look after each other and in every nationality especially Polynesian this is big.

I really like this video it brings the positivity and it shows that the cycle that was once on the news about violence and known for only the flea markets have now changed community's and inspired people to grow together and work together to do better. The good thing about this video is that it was a project from our past graduates from Visual Arts it shows that anything you do will pass on to the next students or people around you and the world.

Omc is one of the only artist from this day in age to ever make it in the music industry. He also lived up to his name Otara Millionaire Club earning about 12 Million in total. The fame did go in come with its highs and lows but it was all worth it. I Really like the way he uses his culture to express through his music. Inspiration to just me but to all the corners of New Zealand.

Freddie Baice are individual from Otara shares his story and experience throughout his life. He is someone that i have met studying as a Visual Artist and i had the chance to sit with him and talk about what he's been doing with himself. Really like his personality and he has a strong character. Shows me that whether you have a good life or struggling if you work hard then you can do anything.

This video shows some history of what happened in Otara when there was are murder in the town centre of Otara hence where it got its name Otara Chopping centre. This video shows the experience of people that enjoy the food at the flea Market in Otara. Are place where different cultures unit as one and treat everyone as they own.

Smashproof are group from South Auckland released their single "Brother" where they spoke about the death of a young boy who was murdered because he tagged on someones fence. This video was a good message to everyone that relates to the situations spoken in the song. Really like the music video and how it looks like they are sitting in the car while driving around Otara.

What Worked?
Having to find stories and videos that related to Otara was a good research foundation to start with. Something that i can talk about while i experiment in the next weeks.

What Didn't Work?
Having to find videos that didn't have anything to do with violence but it is something that i am used to seeing.

What Next?
Doing a response including my hometown Otara into my illustrations or my experiments.

Research 3 #Projection

Projection

For my research i will be having my work based on projection and also animation. But these are videos that i have looked at on youtube that use projection onto glass.

I really like the projection on the walls. It shows creativity and realism. When i first watched this video it made me think of other ways that i can use towards my own work and how i can make the most of it.

What Worked?
Having the knowledge and that i have a fair idea on how to use other ways of projection.
What Didn't Work?
I don't know where to start when it comes to experimenting with glass. will experiment as the weeks go by.

What Next?
I will be looking at how i can experiment this and use this with online tutorials on youtube.

Brothers Movies Ideas #1

Brothers
I was suggested from the critique to look into movies that involve brothers that i could use for my experiments. I really like the thought that was put in for this research base only because it can help me with my storyline if i ever get lost or stuck.

So the link below is the website where i retrieved my images to research on.

https://www.google.co.nz/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=Brother+Movies

Boyz in the Hood

This type of movie is based on young individuals that have that brother connection. In this modern day it is like the term "uso" translated from the english word brother. This term is used to anyone that you consider your brother.

In this movie its all about brotherhood and that is what i share with my friends. Connections are stronger in each of their personality. But together we are one.

Stuck on You

This movie teachers you the importance of how you and your brother should care for each other. In this attempt the director or writer went with con-jointed twins to portray are brother movie. This is a good example of what you do in your life reflects on your family and your brother.

Thor and Loki

Having brothers in a comic movie can really determine how you treat eachother. Because the movies are already written through comics sometimes they change depending on the director or producer. In this movie its all about who is higher than who. You see betrayal and revenge but loyalty brings both of them together.

Four Brothers

When it comes to the concept of brothers this movie has to be the strongest one. Out of all the movies about brothers that i have researched this has to be the most actors in the one. Having two of them african american and two being caucasian really made it a better combination and it was a good way to show everyone that we are all equal.

Movies #Research

In this part of my research il be looking at movies that have inspired me and that relates to my artwork. What i learn from this research base is to challenge myself in making a response for this research post.

Roger Rabbit (Movie)

This movie has to be are good source of research when it relates to my work. Having animations in are real life movie really shows that both worlds collide. in that day of time it would have been a long process to achieve this technique. But because of technology now the process wont be as difficult.

Space Jam (Movie)

My all time favourite movie Space Jam. Has to be a good classic movie that i still watch till this day. Where cartoons meet Basketball legend Michael Jordan and it all starts from there. Every time i watch this movie i still cannot get over the crossover of the two worlds.

What Worked?
I really enjoyed the memories that i had while watching the movies that i researched having that connection with this really helped see what more was important the story line and the visual side of the movies.
What Didn't Work?
Its hard to notice things when you are young and you watch movies only because all you worry about is the content and what it looks like. But being older now i understand that if you have a strong story anything can be told through emotionally and mentally.

What Next?
Looking at Tutorials and videos that could help me learn how to mix video and animation together.

Two Cars One Night #Research

Taika Waititi

Taika Waititi is a Visual Artist who has done a lot for New Zealand and has changed the way movies and short films are looked at.

He is my inspiration when it comes to people in the film industry only because we share the same interest. cheesy comedy with his twist of dialog. He is known for his movie "Boy" where he directed and also played as his farther.

Two Cars One Night
(Short Film)

This short film to me is important because my experiments will be based in the car and this helps me to create my own version of this short film.

I really like the dialog used in this short film because it gives it that New Zealand feel. Having young people in this short film makes them get away with anything that they say and i enjoyed that part of the short film.

Blazed - Drug Driving in New Zealand
Like Taika waititi's short film two cars one night he also advertised drug driving in New Zealand and to me he pulled it off. I really like how he used comedy and dialog that most New Zealanders would understand. Using the car has related my artwork to his short films. Noticing from his other short film two cars one night, he has the main subject are person to set up the main actor and the third person to fill in the gaps.

In his TEDx Talk he speaks about his life experience being in the industry and his achievements.
